Get Ready With Me: Amputee Edition!

Putting on the Prosthetic

When I get up in the morning, I now put on my leg along with my clothes! At first it was a strange and lengthy process, but after some practice it’s becoming easier and more comfortable. In the video below, I explain each part of the prosthetic and what it takes to get ready.

What Does it Feel Like?

It’s difficult to explain the sensations in my stump - yes, phantom pains are real. Throbbing, dull pain is the result of wearing my prosthetic for longer than I should. But I’m grateful for being able to feel, because it’s what allows me to maintain my balance and drive my gorgeous 6-speed Miata.

Taking It Off

My clinician warned me about sweat, but I still wasn’t prepared for the puddle on the floor the first time I removed the sleeve! And South Carolina’s muggy summers don’t help the situation. Beyond that, removing the prosthetic is a simple process but one which must be done with deliberation. Cleaning each portion of the prosthetic is extremely important after use - after all, it’s making continuous contact with my skin and I can’t risk infection. Watch the full process below:

If you have any questions about the process, especially if you or a loved one are in the recovery stages of an amputation, feel free to set up a time to consult with me; I would be happy to discuss it further with you.
